Soukous (n) [sü-ˌküs]: popular guitar-driven dance music created in the Democratic Republic of the Congo under the influence of Cuban rumba. Soukous really jumped into the mainstream once the central African rapid-fire, guitar-driven music swept into Europe in the 1980s. But how did this upbeat, Afro-Caribbean genre gain so much popularity? Let's find out..
